WE ARE TABERNACLE
Tabernacle is a shelter for gathering and celebration. We unlock human potential through the gift of open space. Designed in Greenville, South Carolina, Tabernacle is a place where people from all walks of life can come together, express themselves and celebrate what it means to be fully alive. From drum circles and dance parties to music-making, prayer and meditation, Tabernacle hosts events that span the range of human pursuits. Together, we create experiences that empower.
A SHELTER FROM THE STORM
We believe that creative expression is a basic human right for all. As a platform for the pursuit of our shared humanity, the project serves as place for all to seek and find refuge through reflection, connection and creative action that transcends physical, digital and spiritual realms.
Tabernacle is inspired by Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed and Good Chance Calais, a temporary theater in the middle of a refugee camp in northern France that is designed to foster hope in a time of crisis. While the theater was disbanded due to the destruction of the camp, its vision and purpose lives on through this exhibition.
As an experiment in open hospitality, we welcome your participation. Whether you host the dome in your city, throw a party inside or camp out with us under the stars, we invite you to join our tribe of tentmakers and stand in solidarity with refugees from all walks of life.
A TRIBE OF TENTMAKERS
Tabernacle is brought to life by a tribe of tentmakers who give their time to create experiments and experiences that build community. From Greenville to Georgia, Vietnam and beyond, our Tentmakers are from around the world and are united by their passion for people and desire to build peace and bridge divides through art and creative expression.
festival of shelters
At this moment in time, millions of people are on the move seeking refuge. From Syria and the Middle East to the streets of Ferguson, no place is beyond the reach of violence and chaos. While their experiences are distinctly different, refugees are all united by a common pursuit of a shelter and a place to belong. Whether we're the child of a war-ravaged nation, a victim of police brutality, a homeless citizen or a silent victim of abuse and depression, we can all find common ground in the experience of the refugee.
Festival of Shelters is a week-long demonstration of solidarity with refugees from all walks of life. By coming together to form a temporary encampment and host creative demonstrations, we'll make room for people to find refuge and create a space for the stories of refugees to be seen, heard and experienced.
